Sunflowers Fields Brisbane – where to find them?

If you are looking for sunflowers fields in Brisbane, you probably won’t have much luck directly in the CBD. As far as we are aware, there are no sunflowers fields there, unless you count the odd sunflower or two hanging out at the Brisbane botanic gardens.

If however, you are willing to go on a little road trip, a little weekender from Brisbane, there are some absolutely stunning sunflower two-hour drive south-west of Brisbane. The main fields of sunflower fields to access from Brisbane are in the Darling Downs, Southern Downs and Granite Belt region.

When is the best time to see sunflowers in bloom in Queensland?

Sunflowers is not just a pretty name for the flower it is because they actually love the sun and they bloom in Queensland’s summer months which is from late December to March. It all depends yearly on how hot or cold it has been to when exactly they come out.

Also, if there has been a lot of rain you can expect to see a lot more sunflowers than when the area is in drought.

If it’s been a good year and you like a pretty photograph, its a good little trip to make in the summer as you can get picture perfect photos like this one below by @mattraimondo. If you are a serious instagrammer, you might want to take something to stand on while you take the photos as the flowers are extremely tall. As you can see they are around the same height as her!

Where to find the sunflowers?

I’m going to start to get annoying here and say there is no exact science to where you will find the sunflowers. They tend up pop up in different places every year and sometimes the fun of it is about stumbling upon a beautiful field. Generally, you will know there is a sunflower field nearby when there are a few cars parked outside a random field.

In saying that, we will give you some tips on the best locations and regions where we think you will find them if your timing is right.

The Sunflower Route including Allora Sunflowers

The best thing to do to find sunflowers in the year you visit is to contact the visitor centres of Toowoomba (1800 331 155) and Warwick (07 4661 3122). The folks there are very helpful and are more than happy to set you off in a good direction. You can also have a look at the social media channels of these organisations as they often give out a few good tips.

Also, it is probably good to note that sunflowers only survive around 3-4 weeks so it is really vital that you get your timing right so if you are only going to the area for flowers you might like to ring the Tourist Board in advance of your visit.

The towns that have sunflowers near Brisbane each year are:

  • Cambooya
  • Nobby
  • Toowoomba
  • Warwick
  • Allora
  • Felton
  • Drayton

The best thing to do is take Tourist Route 11, this 50km round trip from Warwick to Allora. Most people take a few hours to complete the route, given time to take photographs of the flowers. You will most likely see some sunflowers as you drive along without doing much more.

However, if you want more guaranteed flowers, here are some of the locations that you might like to plug into your map:

  • Old Allora Racecourse, Allora, QLD
  • Hoey Road, Spring Creek QLD
  • Saal Road, St Helens, QLD
  • 468 Willowvale Road, Willowvale, QLD
  • Rickert Road Nobby QLD
  • Richards Road Nobby QLD
  • Newman Road Drayton QLD
  • Hancock Lane Mount Marshall QLD
  • Glengallan Road Warwick QLD
  • Felton-Clifton Road Nobby QLD

In terms of Instagram, Cambooya is probably the most popular place for sunflowers in the area, especially the field off the New England Highway. In saying this, this can mean it is more crowded so it is nice to look for a quiet spot to take a photo if possible. We would highly recommend going off the beaten path and having a look around the area for some backroads too as they often have the best flowers!

Sunflower Fields Sunshine Coast

The closest sunflower fields to the Sunshine Coast as the ones listed above, the same as Brisbane. We would recommend you add 1 hour to your journey. Therefore it is about 3-4 hours from the Sunshine Coast to the sunflower fields of QLD.

Sunflower Fields Gold Coast

Agains, these are the best sunflower fields to visit from the Gold Coast.

Where to stay in the area?

Visiting the sunflowers is nice but it is also nice to stay a little longer and enjoy the SE Qld countryside.

Warwick is always a great place to base yourself as there quite a few things to do around including many pubs and restaurants to enjoy while you are there. You can see here for all available places to stay in Warwick during your dates.

Allora is also a nice place to base yourself in the area. We would recommend the Allora Lodge Bed and Breakfast. There are a few cool things to do while you are in Allora, one of which is visiting the Mary Poppins House, which if you are travelling with kids is always fun to see. Obviously it wasn’t home to Mary Poppins but the creator P.L. Travers.
